چکیده

DRDC Valcartier is actively working on the assessment of the extent of energetic materials contamination on Canadian DND training ranges. This work is carried out with the objective of creating sustainable training conditions for the Canadian Forces. As part of this effort, research is being undertaken to study, in laboratory conditions, the leaching of explosives from cracked or opened munitions that are found on training ranges. To carry out this research, cracked munitions similar to those found in the field were required. The 81-mm mortar shell was selected as the candidate for the study. It was decided to try to obtain cracked 81-mm mortars using two different practical methods. The first one was the use of demolition explosive (C-4), in sub-critical quantities, in the form of blocks or linear shaped charges applied to the outside of the shell, to simulate the blow-in-place of unexploded ordnances (UXOs) by ammunition technicians. The second one was the detonation of a mortar shell next to another similar round, in order to simulate the attack of a UXO by another incoming round that functions. The experimental set-up for both methods are presented, as well as the results obtained for various conditions. It was shown that it is easy to obtain cracked shells using both methods. This study will demonstrate that the fragments generated by mortar rounds are very efficient at creating cracked shells, more so than the simple sympathetic reaction from the pressure created by an incoming projectile, as first hypothesized. It provides a possible explanation for the explosive contamination of the soil and underlying groundwater table at some training ranges.

Experimental and Numerical Analysis of the Critical Buckling Load of Cracked Sheets

Collapse by buckling a quite common phenomenon in sheets under pressure. When these structures caused by defects such as corrosion and cracks the time of the occurrence of this phenomenon is sensitive and critical load to be significantly reduced. Therefore, in this article sheet of aluminum Al 1200 by cracks in a part of the sheet will be considered. Left angle on the critical buckling load ef...

Nonlinear Dynamic Analysis of Cracked Micro-Beams Below and at the Onset of Dynamic Pull-In Instability

In this paper, the effect of the crack on dynamic behavior of cracked micro-beam in the presence of DC and AC loads are investigated. By applying the residual axial stress and fringing field stress, a nonlinear analytical model of cracked micro-beam is presented and crack is modeled by a massless rotational spring. The governing equation of the system is solved using Galerkin procedure and shoo...

A numerical and experimental study on buckling and post-buckling of cracked plates under axial compression load

Existence of cracks in industrial structures is one of the important causes of their failure, especially when they are subjected to important axial compressive forces that might lead to buckling. Therefore, it must be considered in stress analysis and designing and loading of such structures. In this paper, the buckling and post-buckling behaviors of stainless-steel cracked plates under axial c...

Vibration of cracked plate using differential quadrature method and experimental modal analysis

In this study, the vibration of cracked plates is investigated using the differential quadrature method and experimental modal analysis. The crack, which is assumed to be open, is modeled by the extended rotational spring. With its finite length, the crack divides the plate into six segments. Then, the differential quadrature is applied to the governing differential equations of motion and the ...
